The Impact Of Parenting On Child Development - 1004 Words

Developmental psychologists have long researched and had an interest in how parenting affects child development. Diana Baumrind, a psychologist, identified the four most basic parenting styles in the year 1971-1991. Two of the practices on which the styles came into being were the parental effect and control. The parenting control is where the child is told to follow the rules and demands of the parent, also known as authoritarian parenting. In Asian countries and West Indies, authoritarian parenting was the most common style of parenting. The harsh corporal punishment and the significance of obeying to the demands of their parents have effects on the adolescence. In the story the â€Å"Girl† by Jamaica Kincaid there is a strong disciplinary language, supervision, and aggressiveness from a mother to the daughter: ‘On Sundays try to walk like a lady and not like the slut you are so bent on becoming’ (Kincaid) said the mother to her daughter. Such words, when used i n adolescence, affect the adolescent s self-esteem, mental health, and social behavior. What do experts say about how authoritarian parenting affects adolescents? Authoritarian parenting lowers the self-esteem and basic attitudes of life, skill and a person self-worth. The story â€Å"Girl† talks about a mother who is teaching her daughter all the rules of being a woman, but the tune of the words spoken are harsh and stern.
